Tropicals for Spring

Tropicals for Spring

You might not think of tropical flowers (such as orchids, anthirium, ginger and the like) as spring flowers, but they are fabulous for any season, when used in the right shades.

Spring brings to mind bright shades of yellow, pink, coral, green, and purple, and there are a plethora of tropical flowers available in those colors. An added bonus: Tropicals are very long-lasting, so if you need a gift or decor for a party or your home, you'll get a lot of bang for your buck. One of our favorite flowers at L.A. Botanicals is the Phalanopsis orchid, shown below in a contemporary budvase design. Two blossoms are all that's needed to pack a powerful punch of color.

Another spectacular way to use tropicals is to combine shades and textures, along with other spring flowers. Here we have a tall arrangement (used as an entry piece for a party at a restaurant) that features pink calla lilies, orange Mokarra orchids, yellow eremerus, and tropical monstera leaves. Groupings of succulents and candles are a great way to accent the bouquet without adding a lot of cost.

For the same party, we designed multiple small pieces to decorate the center of long dining tables, using the restaurant's existing colored glassware to accent the color scheme. Celadon green orchids are great any time of year, but especially effective for spring designs.

One of the most dramatic of spring shades is violet. It can be paired wonderfully with hot pink, coral, or apple green for a vivid pop of color. Below we show the very expensive "Sapphire" Vanda orchid, designed in a client's silver vases. Against a clean white and silver background, they are really spectacular.

Here's another purple orchid, the Vanda, along with hot pink Catteleyas and green cymbidiums, accented with folded tropical leaves. Pretty, isn't it?

Finally, for something really spectacular, shown below are beautiful pink ginger. Designed with white/green anthirium, peach eremerus, green cymbidium orchids, and a variety of palm fronds and banana leaves, this big display brings elegance and the "wow" factor to a showroom at the Pacific Design Center. For this arrangement, we used the colors from the two antique vases flanking the design as inspiration for the flowers.
